Rhodonite is a manganese metasilicate mineral with a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5. Its crystal system is triclinic. It occurs most often in massive or granular habits but can also crystallize in tabular form, often with rounded edges. Rhodonite’s name derives from the Greek word meaning ‘rose-red,’ and it is usually that color, though it can also be brownish red. Rhodonite frequently contains black inclusions of manganese oxide. It was once mined in the Russian Ural Mountains and is now found in Sweden, Australia, India, Madagascar, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, Canada and the USA.
