Henry How of Nova Scotia named the mineral Ca2B5SiO9(OH)5 when he first described it in 1868, but later it was given the name Howlite by James Dwight Dana, an American geologist and mineralogist.

Howlite is a basic calcium silico-borate mineral with a hardness od 3.5. Howlite is porous white stone and is commonly marked with black, gray, or brown intersecting vine-like or skin-like veins. It may fluoresce cream-yellow to white in shortwave ultraviolet light. Howlite’s crystal system is monoclinic and can be found in large nodules and masses, and in fragments of these. Nodules often resemble cauliflower heads. Crystals, which are tabular, are very small and usually clustered together. They are found in only one region in the Canadian Province of Nova Scotia, where they form on large nodules. It can be earthy (minerals that crumble like loose sandstone when exposed to stress).
